Descant to the hymn tune LOBE DEN HERREN. Free score with prologue introduction, bridge, harmonized descant and optional SATB a cappella verse. Free score.
LOBE DEN HERREN is based on Joachim Neander's eponymous 1680 chorale Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren. One of the great chorale writers of his time, this enduring chorale is considered by some to be his best, even one of the best (Bach was only five years old when this was written). The tune is widely believed to have originated as a folk tune.
The text is attributed to the prolific author, Anonymous, and appeared in the Straslund Gesangbuch (1665), a few years prior to the tune with which it is now associated. A search on the term 'straslund gesangbuch' will yield many links to LOBE DEN HERREN, demonstrating the significance of the pairing of this text and tune.
